Ever use the word challenge in place of problem? Just recently, it became clear to me why it is better to see problems as challenges rather than just problems. Challenges suggest a competition. A problem somehow implies to me that it was something I might have avoided but did not. Thus, I feel partially responsible for creating the problem. A challenge suggests an obstacle, something I did not create, but must face. OK, this is somewhat simplistic, but stay with me for a moment.
When we face challenges, there is the anticipation of the 'hunt' with adrenalin (epinephrine) and endorpfins called out, so to speak. I see these as positive hormones. When it is a problem, there are more negative connotations and negative stress hormones released (cortisol and norepinephrine). Thus, a challenge creates positive energy to resolve the issue, while a problem causes me some dread (negative energy) in getting in to solve it.
Thus, using the word challenge engenders more positive attributes than the word problem. I imagine that also means I will resolve more challenges than problems, needing less effort and generating more energy. Just a thought.
